Does Acupuncture hurt?
Acupuncture needles are much finer than the hypodermic needles which are used medically for injections, they can be as fine as a human hair and are minimally invasive. Many people do not feel anything during the treatment however there can be slight discomfort upon insertion. There is sometimes an aching sensation which occurs during the treatment however this is a normal response and nothing to be concerned about.
How can Traditional Chinese Medicine help me?
Traditional Chinese Medicine is considered effective for a wide range of illnesses and symptoms. It can be used to promote health and support general wellbeing and is used predominatly to keep the bodies energy centre in balance.
How many sessions will I need?
TCM Acupuncture is most effective when used as a preventative healthcare system and the amount of sessions depends upon the patients presenting condition, this can be discussed during the consultation to ensure the best treatment is given. However, sessions are generally carried out with weekly intervals in the first instance and once the patients health is back in balance, top up treatments can be continued monthly or as and when required by the patient.
How do I prepare and what should I bring to the treatment?
Before the treatment avoid stimulants such as alcohol or caffeine, and try not to have a large meal one hour prior to the appointment as you may be required to lie on your stomach.
How will I feel after a treatment?
Generally people feel calm and relaxed following acupuncture and in some instances can feel tired.
Are there any side effects?
There are virtually no side effects, however there may be some minor bruising or slight bleeding at the point of insertion however, this is rare. Therefore, anyone with a blood clotting condition or those taking anticoagulant medications are advised against acupuncture.
Does my GP need to know I intend to have acupuncture?
The Acupuncturist will need to know about any medications you are taking prior to each treatment as this could affect the outcome. It is advisable to tell your GP that you are considering acupuncture.
Should I continue to take my medication when having acupuncture?
Yes, always consult your Doctor regarding any changes in medication and NEVER alter or stop taking medications without professional guidance.

The following healthcare insurers recognise ATCM; Simplyhealth, Medisure, Sovereign Health Care, HSF Health Plan, National Friendly, Healthsheild, Medicare (GP referral), Medicash, Paycare and BHFS. Many other healthcare providers are beginning to include cover for traditional chinese medicinal acupuncture, however, you will need to check this in your policy documents or with your Private Healthcare provider because it does vary between insurers.
How long does the treatment take?
The initial consultation, can take 45 minutes, during which time we cover the patients full medical history, current issues and diagnosis. Acupuncture treatments can last between 20-30 minutes depending upon the presenting symptoms. So the first appointment will take approximately 1hr 15 minutes.
Are there cancellation charges?
If you contact us 24 hours prior to the appointment to rearrange no cancellation charges will apply. A £20 cancellation charge is payable within 24 hours of the appointment time.
